Thursday’s trade deadline felt like a missed opportunity for the Chicago Cubs to add a more proven starter who could get the ball in a playoff game.

The Chicago Cubs have made the long-awaited trade for a pitcher. The Cubs have acquired pitcher Mike Soroka from the Nationals, the team announced on Wednesday evening. ESPN and The Athletic were among the first to report the trade. Soroka signed a one-year, $9 million deal last December with the Nationals.

An All-Star in 2019 with Atlanta, the 27-year-old Soroka is 3-8 with a 4.87 ERA this season for the Nationals, who signed him to a one-year, $9 million contract in the offseason. He should provide depth in the Cubs’ rotation behind Matthew Boyd and Shota Imanaga.
