The moon will appear a striking reddish color in a few weeks when a magnificent total lunar eclipse becomes visible all across the United States.

Hundreds of millions of Americans will have the chance in March to see the first total lunar eclipse in nearly three years.

NASA has said various 'lunar events' will be happening across March, with residents across the UK able to see a rare Blood Moon in the sky.

A total lunar eclipse, commonly called a blood moon, will take place in March as many Houston-area students are wrapping up spring break.

"Dust and clouds can affect the ultimate color of the moon during this event, which means that each total lunar eclipse ends up being somewhat unique and ultimately 'reflective' of the state of our own planet's weather," Eric Edelman, the planetarium director at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Jim and Linda Lee Planetarium, told Mashable.

The total lunar eclipse will start late on the night of March 13 and will end in the early hours of March 14, according to NASA. An eclipse like this happens when the Moon, Earth and Sun all align so that the Moon is passing into the Earth’s shadow.
