Disney and DirecTV have ended a carriage dispute that had left viewers without access to ESPN and ABC. Here's what the new deal means.

Disney and DirecTV came to an agreement to return Disney-owned channels like ESPN and ABC to the air over the weekend, in time for college football and Monday's NFL game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons.

DirecTV customers received a surprise Saturday just in time for Week 3 of college football. After a roughly two-week blackout and growing frustration from customers, DirecTV and Disney reached a deal Saturday morning that brought ESPN and other Disney-owned channels back to the pay-tv provider’s customers.

The Disney-DirecTV dispute is in its second week. Over the weekend, DirecTV filed an FCC complaint, alleging Disney had failed to negotiate in good faith.

DirecTV on Saturday announced it had reached a deal with Walt Disney Co. that will restore ESPN and ABC-owned stations to its service after a nearly 2-week dispute that blacked out those networks for millions of viewers across the U.

The two companies on Saturday ended their dispute, which resulted in a blackout on the service of ESPN, ABC and other Disney-owned channels that began on Sept. 1.

The agreement comes just in time to let DirecTV customers check out Sunday's Emmy Awards and Monday Night Football.

Disney and DirecTV announced on Saturday they had reached a deal to restore its "entire portfolio of networks," including ESPN and ABC, to the satellite provider following a two-week blackout. The "agreement in principle" comes as the college and pro football seasons are ramping up.
