The benefits of free breakfast clubs will be "huge" for children who take part, a headteacher has said. The government announced 750 schools would provide the daily clubs from the start of the summer term in April as part of a pilot scheme ahead of an England-wide rollout.

The schools are expected to offer a free breakfast to all pupils and at least 30 minutes of childcare before school.

The Government’s new breakfast club scheme has officially been announced, with 750 schools across nine regions of England set to be the first in the programme from the beginning of the summer term. It will see children getting a free breakfast 30 minutes before every school day.

A head teacher has said her primary school has pulled out of a government breakfast club scheme because the funding does not cover the cost of it. Sharneyford Primary School in Bacup was one of 14 in Lancashire named as part of the nationwide scheme involving 750 schools.
