A tropical storm warning is in effect for the coastal regions of Virginia, the Outer Banks, Pamlico Sound, and the Eastern Shore. A coastal flood warning is in place from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon for coastal areas in Hampton Roads, on the Eastern Shore, and on the Outer Banks.

An updated tropical storm warning was released by the NWS Newport/Morehead City NC on Wednesday at 4:57 a.m. in effect until 1 p.m. for Mainland Dare.

Much of North Carolina’s Outer Banks region is under a tropical storm watch with Hurricane Erin expected to skirt the area Wednesday through Thursday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Erin was a Category 4 storm with 130 mph winds on Monday night as it passed to the east of the Bahamas. The forecast track keeps the center of the storm well away from the U.S. East Coast this week, but tropical storm and storm surge watches have been issued for the North Carolina Outer Banks. The NWS Wakefield VA issued an updated tropical storm warning at 10:50 p.m. on Wednesday in effect until Thursday at 7 a.m. for Western Currituck.

Hurricane Erin is a huge Category 4 storm and is expected to both grow larger and stronger today as it moves toward the west-northwest. The center of the storm is expected to remain offshore as it moves between the U.S. and Bermuda.

The Atlantic Ocean is starting to get crowded with tropical troublemakers, and a new area of thunderstorms just caught the attention of the National Hurricane Center to monitor for development.
