As of Friday evening, Hurricane Erin had strengthened into a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of up to 100 mph and "expected to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane this weekend," the National Hurricane Center said at 11 p.m. ET.

Erin is expected to become a hurricane Friday, Aug. 15 and a major hurricane by Sunday morning. What Florida can expect from the storm.

For now, most reliable computer models that meteorologists use show Erin curving away from the United States, spinning off the East Coast later in August.
