When the final list of participants for next week’s PGA Championship was revealed Tuesday, there was a notable name on it.

A South Carolina native will play in this week’s PGA Championship after he reportedly received a special invitation. Dustin Johnson -- a Columbia native who attended Coastal Carolina University -- is in the 156-player field and will tee off with Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa at 1:14 p.

The two-time major championship winner and LIV Golf member earned a special exemption from the PGA of America to compete in the PGA Championship next week in North Carolina. Johnson’s previous exemption into the second major championship of the year — a five-year pass for his win at the Masters in 2020 — ended last year.

Also getting special invitations were Joaquin Niemann, a three-time winner on LIV this year, and Sergio Garcia.

Xander Schauffele is the defending PGA Championship winner, after he came out on top in the season's second major at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Schauffele is in the field along with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, who won the Masters last month.

Of his 16 PGA Tour victories, Thomas has won on the same course twice three times – the CIMB Classic on the West Course at TCP Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort in Hawaii and the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges Golf Club in South Korea.
