Los Angeles students and teachers return to class for the new academic year Thursday under a cloud of apprehension after a summer filled with immigration raids and amid worries schools could become a target in the Trump administration’s aggressive crackdown.
Last month, a federal judge in Los Angeles handed down a temporary order placing some restrictions on the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in that city. The Trump administration now wants the Supreme Court to lift those restrictions.
Organizations are asking people to participate in a 24-hour boycott, to attend rallies in MacArthur Park and downtown LA and support local businesses and street vendors.
More than 500,000 students in the Los Angeles Unified School District began a new school year Thursday with concerns and fear amid the ongoing immigration raids.
