Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers are searching for a new quarterback after Justin Fields joined the New York Jets and Russell Wilson began visiting other teams. Pittsburgh hasn’t had a stable presence at the position since future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger retired.

Detroit Lions is adding a new backup quarterback to accompany star Jared Goff in the 2025 NFL season, having arranged the signing of a former Pittsburgh Steelers player from head coach Mike Tomlin.

The Steelers made it clear heading into the offseason that they wanted to re-sign either Wilson or Justin Fields at the quarterback spot. Fields ended up signing with the New York Jets on a two-year, $40 million contract, though, and Wilson is taking free agent visits with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants as he weighs his options.
