Relations between the European Union and the Republic of India are currently defined by the 1994 EU–India Cooperation Agreement. The EU is a significant trade partner for India and the two sides have been attempting to negotiate a free trade deal since 2007. [1]

On 17 June 2022, the European Union relaunched negotiations with India for a Free Trade Agreement, and launched separate negotiations for an Investment Protection Agreement and an Agreement on Geographical Indications (GIs).

2022 marked the 60th anniversary of EU-India bilateral relations, highlighting several key achievements: The EU was India's third-largest trading partner in 2021. EU foreign direct investment (FDI) in India reached €87 billion in 2020. Nearly 15% of Indian exports were directed to the EU in 2021.

EU has invested Euro 88 billion in India from 2000-2023. With 4,500 EU companies operating in India, they have contributed to creation of over 1.7 million direct and 5 million indirect jobs in the country.

India is the EU’s 9 th largest trading partner, accounting for 2.2% of the EU's total trade in goods in 20231, well behind the USA (16.7%), China (14.6%), or the UK (10.1%). Trade in goods between the EU and India has increased by almost 90% in the last decade.
